Driving the Spiti Valley in India
Exhilarating, terrifying, edifying, fantastic & at times equally funny & dramatic, we managed to stay “on track” despite those so called “roads,” lack of electricity (tough to recharge cameras!), & of course losing our guide, poor Ajay to altitude sickness. I hope he’s recovered but I have to add it was brilliant to have a Buddhist monk taking us through Spiti & Dharmasala, definitely a highlight!
There were so many highlights, the lowlights were quickly forgotten & only the good & surreal times rest – driving in the Spiti Valley in a 2 wheel drive rests extremely surreal with so many adventures en route, as does the fun cricket game in Kaza.
At the Kunzum Pass, 14,931ft, with fabulous guide & drivers
The ancient temple sites were amazing & that we were able to participate in the everyday life of the monasteries was a huge plus. I had wanted to continue a spiritual journey I had begun in Bhutan & I certainly did!
Thanks Barbara & thanks to Sanjay & our drivers Manjo & Vijay, truly talented drivers to get us over those trails and to look after us to the end, professional, kind & dedicated! 5 stars!
My one regret, out in the wilderness, was that it was too bad I’m missed out on the Kalachakras in the area…..imagine my surprise when I saw last night that you are offering a Kalachakra in Leh next year!!!!! Please put me down for for a double occupancy…do I need to fill in the official online site???? I am so excited about it….I’ve been looking at HH’s schedule for 3 years so this one was meant to be!
Manali with the Angora bunny ladies!
Editor Note: Original World/Spirit of India offers an annual summer journey to the Indian Himalayas called “Ancient Cultures of the Indian Himalayas.” The regions we travel to are lesser known by tourists, hence retain its authentic traditional character. The tour is adventuresome but not difficult. The rewards are immense! We are also offering a special tour to Ladakh in 2014 to attend the Kalachakra teachings by H.H the Dalai Lama as well as the Hemis Festival.
