For the first post of 2014, we wanted to share a profound and inspiring video segment of the ancient art of sand painting, practiced by Tibetan Buddhists for the past 2 millennium. The Kalachakra initiation rite, which means “wheel of time,” takes place this July in Ladakh, India, and will be taught by the 14th Dalia Lama.
This video shows the construction of the sand painting at the ceremony in 2002. The Dalia Lama chooses when and where to offer the Kalachakra normally every 2 or 3 years. As Herzog explains in the full length film, the creation AND destruction of the Kalachakra is the “most eagerly awaited event for the faithful.” More than a half a million pilgrims gather to take part in the ritual.
